The gracious capital city of Florida sits near the Georgia border in Northwest Florida. This was an ideal location for the capital back in 1823, as Tallahassee is halfway between St. Augustine and Pensacola, Florida's major early 19th century cities.

Today Tallahassee exudes a southern charm more reminiscent of Savannah than Miami. Sprawling live oaks, pines, and azaleas shade streets lined with restored 19th century homes, some of which have been transformed into Tallahassee Florida Bed and Breakfasts. Visitors may want to do nothing more than stroll along these "canopy roads", admiring the historic architecture that was spared during the Civil War. The downtown Tallahassee Historic Trail is a good route to follow.

Yet there is much to do and see in and around Tallahassee. Museums abound in the capital city, exhibiting a wide array of material; the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, the Mary Brogan Museum of Art & Science, and the Museum of Florida History are just a few examples. Historic sites such as the Knott House Museum, where the Emancipation Proclamation was read for the first time in the state of Florida, are also worth a visit.

Outdoor recreation enthusiasts will find much to do in Apalachicola National Forest and at several state parks. Florida Caverns State Park has the only dry caves open to visitation in Florida; delicate soda straws and formidable stalactites and stalagmites are a wonder to behold. Wakulla Springs State Park features one of the deepest freshwater springs in the world, and Torreya State Park on the Apalachicola River boasts tall bluffs, rare Torreya evergreens, and a pre-Civil War home.

Full days will be rewarded by luxurious lodging in Tallahassee Florida Bed and Breakfasts.
