St. Augustine is a charming historic town on the coast of Northeast Florida, less than an hour from the Georgia border. To stay in a St. Augustine Florida Bed and Breakfast is to lodge in the country's oldest permanent European settlement; the city was founded in 1565. While blessed with modern amenities, St. Augustine retains much of its historic - read romantic - charm. The biggest problem history buffs will have in this town is deciding which impressive historic site to visit first. St. Augustine's Colonial Spanish Quarter is a garrison town from the 1740's. Today it is a living history museum with costumed historical interpreters who reveal what life was like for residents of this remote outpost of the Spanish Empire. A different - but no less interesting - slice of history is found at the nearby World Golf Hall of Fame.
The Castillo de San Marcos is the most impressive of all the historical landmarks in St. Augustine. It took 23 years to construct - from 1672 to 1695 - but once finished it successfully repelled two British attacks. Fort Matanzas, south of the city is a national monument built on a barrier island; the National Park Service operates a ferry to the fort daily.
There are, of course, innumerable opportunities for outdoor recreation in and around St. Augustine, from scenic cruises to beach horseback rides, charter fishing to golf. After a day of sightseeing and physical activity, relax in St. Augustine Florida Bed and Breakfasts before heading out to explore the city after sunset.
