Tarpon Springs sits at the mouth of the Anclote River on the coast of Central West Florida, thirty miles northwest of Tampa. It was settled by Greek immigrants at the end of the 19th century, and Greek culture remains strong in present times. Stay at a Tarpon Springs Florida Bed and Breakfast while discovering this unique town and the greater area.
Sponging is what drew the Greeks here more than a hundred years ago. Sponge diving was a craft in Greece and it was one in Tarpon Springs until the 1940's, when the market shifted. Still, the town's ties to the water are evident in the historic buildings that line Dodecanese Boulevard, the main street along the waterfront. Guests of Tarpon Springs Florida Bed and Breakfasts will be charmed by the various shops and eateries. Be sure to visit the Sponge Factory, a museum, cultural center and shop that reveals much about the astonishing creatures known as sponges.
Weeki Wachee Springs - or the City of Live Mermaids - is approximately thirty miles north of Tarpon Springs Florida Bed and Breakfasts and simply must be visited. One of Florida's oldest and most unique roadside attractions, Weeki Wachee claims to be an enchanted spring inhabited by mermaids, manatees, and turtles. The first show at the Weeki Wachee Springs underwater theater took place in 1947, when mermaids performed a synchronized underwater ballet. Worldwide fame was gained in 1959, when ABC purchased and promoted it and girls as far as Japan dreamed of becoming mermaids. The mermaids continue to perform to this day.
