Lakeland is in the heart of Central West Florida, approximately forty-five minutes east of Tampa and an hour southwest of Orlando. First settled in the 1870s, Lakeland swelled towards the end of the 19th century when United States troops were sent to Florida to await deployment to during the Spanish-American War. Close to ten thousand troops were stationed in Lakeland, and the town expanded to accommodate them. As a result, the downtown area of Lakeland is sizable and hundreds of buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nearly a dozen lakes are scattered around Lakeland, and they help define the geography of the town. There is Lake Morton and the Lake Morton Historic District, home to the Polk Museum of Art and near the Florida Southern College. FSC is the only Frank Lloyd Wright designed campus in the world and features more buildings designed by the architect than in any other city in the country. Another attraction is Lake Mirror, where calm waters reflect the stone pillars of the Lake Mirror Promenade. Guests of Lakeland Florida Bed and Breakfasts will find perusing through town delightful.

Other attractions include the spring training of the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium, and the Florida Air Museum - home to the exclusive Howard Hughes collection. The Imperial Symphony Orchestra sponsors such fun events as Tuesday evening masterwork concerts and a Concert Under the Stars at the nearby Bok Sanctuary Gardens; and people travel from all over the country to attend the annual Mayfair By the Lake Art Show.
