DeFuniak Springs was established by the Pensacola and Atlantic Railroad in the 1880's; it was created to be a resort destination and was supported by the Chautauqua Movement - an organization devoted to educate and entertain communities through art, music, educational speakers, and more. From the start, then, DeFuniak Springs was an engaging community with an intellectual atmosphere. It comes as no surprise that the oldest extant library in Florida is in DeFuniak Springs.

Located in Northwest Florida on the shores of Lake DeFuniak, DeFuniak is graced with many lovely historic buildings. Guests of DeFuniak Florida Bed and Breakfasts may enjoy a walking tour of more than 200 historic sites in town, including Victorian homes and the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood. The Walton County Museum, located in the former Train Depot, provides interesting details about the history of DeFuniak Springs and its residents.

DeFuniak Springs Florida Bed and Breakfasts are less than an hour from the Gulf Coast and its beaches. Grayton Beach State Park is an idyllic place to swim, paddle, and fish. Anglers have the best of both worlds in DeFuniak Springs - salt water fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and fresh water fishing in Western Lake.

Ponce de Leon Springs State Park is 20 minutes east of DeFuniak Springs. Ponce de Leon takes its name from a Spanish explorer who was searching for the fountain of youth; and at a constant 68 degrees, the springs do have an invigorating quality. Pick up picnic supplies in town before heading to the park for an afternoon of swimming, hiking, and fishing.
