Apalachicola is a small town on the coast of Northwest Florida, also known as the Florida Panhandle and sometimes referred to as the Forgotten Coast. In spite of that moniker, travelers in search of a quiet beaches, unparalleled sunsets, and fresh seafood would do well to remember Apalachicola.
Guests of Apalachicola Florida bed and breakfasts are often charmed by this quaint, historic town. In the early 1800's it was an important port for the cotton industry, for it sits both at the mouth of the Apalachicola River and on a protected bay in the Gulf of Mexico. Today the cotton industry has given way to seafood; Apalachicola is very much a working maritime town, with a waterfront dotted with fishing boats and local restaurants full of fresh oysters and shrimp.
While cotton no longer flows abundantly along these waterways, evidence of that prosperous time is revealed in the large National Register Historic District. Walking tours lead visitors past impressive Victorian mansions, some of which have been converted to graceful Apalachicola Florida Bed and Breakfasts. Visit the 1840's era Sponge Exchange, a remnant from the time when Sponges were a principal export, and admire tin warehouses along Water Street. Be sure to visit the John Gorrie Museum State Park for a look at the original prototype of the modern air conditioner.
There are many opportunities for outdoor recreation in and around Apalachicola. The Apalachicola Paddling Trail System is considered one of the top places to kayak in the country. Nearby St. George Island State Park offers miles of undeveloped beaches, sand dunes and salt marshes. Golf, fishing, biking, hiking, … Apalachicola has it all.
